Meet the staff!

Frank Minter, President Frank@salemgym.com
In 1980 Frank saw a need for high level gymnastics in Winston-Salem and as such was instrumental in starting Salem Gymnastics Sports Center.  Frank earned an engineering degree from NC State and a MBA UNC Chapel Hill.  For most of his working career he was a representative for IBM located in Winston Salem.  Frank is the business manager for Salem Gymnastics Sports Center.  He is well traveled, enjoys scuba diving, working out and driving his Mini Cooper, and loves to see children enjoy exercising and going home sweating!
Beth Morphis, Co-Owner Beth@salemgym.com
Beth has been flipping all her life, dancing, acting, and eventually making the first gymnastics team in Winston-Salem. Her love of the sport inspired her parents to open Salem Gymnastics Center in 1980 where she continued to teach and compete gymnastics, accepting a full gymnastics scholarship to Illinois State University. Fate dealt an interesting blow during the fall of her freshman year, when an uneven bar fall led to a torn ACL and reconstructive knee surgery. She spent the next four months in a full leg cast, six months on crutches and two years in rehab. She learned many things during this time, including both patience and a giant swing on bars, which she was the first ISU gymnast to compete. After college Beth came home and, along with her parents and husband, began running the family business.  Beth has been a long time NC-USAG Board Member and a speaker at both USAG State and Regional Congresses, as well as an integral part of USAIGC Nationals from 1989-2001.  Additionally, she is a founding member of Motion Evolution, serves as lay leader at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, and loves to travel and listen to Jackson Browne. Beth is married to Kenny Morphis and has two awesome children, Jon and Page. She loves working at Salem with her husband and father, and feels very fortunate to have a job she looks forward to going to every day. Her hope is that the lives she touches will take the lessons learned and continue on to greatness wherever they go.
Kenny Morphis, Co-Owner Kenny@salemgym.com

Carole came to Salem back in the 1990’s as a parent of one of our competitive gymnasts.   Within a few years, she began teaching Parent Tots and Tumbleweeds.  In 1999 Carole was diagnosed with breast cancer and took a sabbatical to fight for her life.  She returned a year later running our Tumblebus program.    She is our founder and program director of Fit-Nastics an after-school program at several elementary schools in Forsyth County.
Carole is our department leader for our Tumbleweed preschool program.  With her love of children and children’s music, Carole loves to research and find new music and loves writing lesson plans.   The one she is most proud of is our pirate week.  “Each year we come up with new ideas to add to this theme”.  “I know we have the best teachers anywhere, because they have more fun teaching this than I think the children…. How cool is that?”
Carole recently has taken retirement from teaching.  “I can still do a mean forward roll, it’s just the body hurts afterwards!”   You can find her several evenings behind the desk in our main office.   She is the mother of three children:  Jamie, Johanna, EJ.  Jamie competed for Salem Gymnastics from the age of 6 through her junior year in high school.  Carole has been married to her husband Bruce for 26 years.  If you like or dislike what your child is doing, give Carole a shout out!

There is no other place I would rather be than home or at Salem, my second home!”

Jeff DeVito, Level 1-5 & AAU Team Jeff@salemgym.com
Jeff is from upstate New York and moved to North Carolina for college and golf.  If someone had told Jeff when he was growing up that he would end up being a gymnastics coach, he would have told them that they were crazy.
In 1991 Jeff took a summer job at Salem “flipping kids” and has never looked back.  “I’m very happy that I took that job because I love coaching and I look forward to going to work everyday.”
Jeff does a little of everything at the gym, serving as Department Leader for the Level program, Tumbleweed teacher, and anything else that is needed.  He is also in charge of staff training – “its fun to pass on what I have learned to new staff members.”  Over the years Jeff has been a Clinician at various State clinics and always draws a crowd.

Highlights of her performing career include dancing as a soloist at The Kennedy Center, and working with Gladys Knight, Jay Leno, Tina Turner, Elizabeth Perkins, and Tommy Hilfiger, and David Alan Grier among others.
Some of her favorite projects were a production of “Chicago” for Center Stage in Minneapolis (Top 10 Best Show of the Year), choreography for “America’s Most Talented Kids”, and the Golden Nugget Hotel in Atlantic City.  Her film career includes “Weekend at Bernie’s”, “From the Hip”, and “Alien Outlaw” where she had the lead.

Curtis Rucker, USAG Girls Team/Tumbling DL Curtis@salemgym.com
Curtis has had the privilege of growing in a military family.  Part of that time he spent growing up in Japan.  “I learned a lot about different cultures and wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.”  Curtis has always had a passion for working with children and spent three and a half years as a teacher at The Children’s Center for The Physically Disabled.  Surprisingly enough that is how he came to work in gymnastics.  He was the teacher for Mr. Jeff and Ms. Charlene’s daughter, Gracie, and his obvious love for helping children led to a job offer at Salem.  “If you had told me a long time ago that I would be a gymnastics coach I would have laughed.”
In the years that Curtis has been at Salem he has worked very hard to become a major part of the Salem family.  With the help and support of our staff and many training clinics, Curtis is now out Department Leader for all tumbling classes.
