AAU or USAG ... How do they compare?

 

Salem Gymnastics is excited to add AAU competition to our programs. 

The AAU program allows us to provide a recreational approach to the sport of gymnastics.

 

 

AAU (Amateur Athletic Union)

USA Gymnastics (USAG)

 

 

General

 

AAU is for girls who want to continue competing gymnastics on a recreational Level.

 

USAG is for more advanced girls who strive to achieve the highest level of competitive gymnastics.

 

Practices

Level 1– one or two 1 hour practices/ week

Level 2–one or two 1 ½ hour practices/week

Level 3 – two 2 hour practices/week

Level 4 & 5 – two 2 ½ hour practices/ week

 

Levels 4 & 5:  3 days/week – 3 hours/day

Level 6:          4 days/week – 3-4 hours/day

Levels 7-10:   5-6 days/week - 4 hours/day

 

Season

Winter & spring

Level 1 & 2 – in house demos & 1-2 Fun Meets (participation is optional)

Levels 3-5 - Mix of in-house meets and meets at other clubs; approx. 3-5 meets

 

Fall (L. 4-6) or spring (L. 7-10); approx. 6-8 meets

 

 

Travel

Level 1 & 2 events at Salem

Most Level 3-5 meets at Salem or within 1 hour of W-S; plus State Meet

 

Levels 4-6 -  statewide

Levels 7-10 – across the southeast, possibly further

 

Tuition

(2007-08

Level 1 - $56/month (1x week)            

Level 2 - $ 75/month (1x week)  

Level 3 - $145/month
Level 4 & 5- $ na/month

Does not include meet fees, travel and uniforms.

 

Levels 4 & 5    $195/month

Level 6 -          $210/month

Levels 7 – 10   $225/month
Does not include meet fees, travel and uniforms.

 

Meet Fees

$40-$60 per meet plus AAU Membership

$50- $100 per meet plus USAG Membership

 

 

Uniform

Approx. $50.00-$75.00 for leotard

Available for Levels 1 & 2

Required for Levels 3 & 4

Additional attire available

 

Approx. $140.00-$180.00 for leotard, jacket & pants

Required for Levels 4-10

Additional attire available

 

Booster Club

None

Mandatory fund raising & volunteer hours

 

 

Team Selection

 

At the discretion of the Salem Staff

At the discretion of the Salem Staff

 

Competition

Mix of in-house Fun Meets & local competitions

Strong competition from across the state with some of the top gymnasts in NC and the USA

 

 

Awards

Lots of ribbons, medals, trophies for all

Awards for top finishers (usually top 50%)

 

Commitment

Attendance/participation is encouraged with other activities suggested to take second place.

 

Attendance/participation is mandatory with other activities taking second place.

AAU Level 3 can choose two workouts from four offered each week.

AAU Level 4 & 5 will train Tues & Thurs 3:30-6:00.
